What does this qualification cover?
This qualification allows learners to develop basic knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children, aged from birth to five years, based in a variety of settings. It also helps learners understand their role in supporting children’s development.
The qualification covers:
• healthy eating for children and planning and taking part in activities to encourage children to eat healthily
• supporting the provision of a safe learning environment for young children
• health and safety requirements and the importance of keeping all children safe from harm
• designing a range of play activities for young children aimed at their age and stage of development.
Who is it suitable for?
The qualification is designed for learners aged pre-16 and above who would like to develop their understanding of the main issues in relation to childcare learning and development.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification.
How is this qualification structured?
To achieve the Level 1 Award in Working with Children learners must achieve 5 mandatory units:
• Unit 01 Encouraging children to eat healthily
• Unit 02 Create a safe environment for young children
• Unit 03 Working in a team
• Unit 04 Contribute to equality of opportunity in support of young children’s development
• Unit 05 Provide a range of appropriate play activities for young children.
How is it assessed?
To achieve the Level 1 Award in Working with Children learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the 5 mandatory units. Grades are not awarded.
Level 1 Award in Working with Children is internally assessed.
What related qualifications can you progress to?
Learners undertaking this qualification could progress into further education, including the following qualifications:
• Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce
• Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care or Children and Young People's Settings
• Intermediate Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.
