Understanding the future

The Department for Education has released the final list of Health and Social Care qualifications, signalling the withdrawal of 16-19 funding for new starts from 1 August 2024.

We understand the challenges and apprehension that this brings to educators in the sector. That’s why we’re here to provide you with the information and support needed to navigate the changing landscape.

No learner left behind

At NCFE, we’re committed to ensuring that every learner still has a pathway to success. As the experts in technical education, we have the expertise to craft exceptional solutions to these challenges. Every learner will have a different journey, whether that’s completing a qualification to go straight into work, moving onto further study or progressing into high-level study. While acknowledging the importance of T Levels, we also recognise that some learners might wish to study social care and move straight into employment.

Routes for learners from 2024

There are three choices for 16-19 learners from September 2024 which include:

  • Level 3 study programme
  • Apprenticeships
  • T Levels

For learners that feel the T Levels aren’t right for them and hope to go straight into employment in health and social care, we recommend a mixed programme built up of a core qualification that is augmented with a range of specialist qualifications.

For example, a study programme for a learner that hopes to work in elderly care in a nursing home might be made up of:

Core qualification:

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care

Specialist qualifications:

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Principles of Dementia Care

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care
