Our Assessment Innovation Fund pilots: Metaverse Learning

Shaping the future of learning and assessment

We’re on a mission to break boundaries in assessment with an investment fund to support and pilot new ideas on the future of assessment.

Enhanced Assessment Immersive Learning (EAIL)

Metaverse Learning has been awarded £50,000 by the Assessment Innovation Fund (AIF), supported by Ufi VocTech Trust and NCFE, to develop a pioneering mixed reality (MR) platform that personalises assessment and learning through advanced diagnostics and AI technology.

The EAIL project seeks to overcome current VR/MR education limitations by delivering tailored learning experiences for each user. By creating a learner profile, EAIL adapts VR scenarios to individual abilities, making VR training more accessible and effective for diverse learning needs.

Methodology

Our research questions are:

1. Can a learner profile evaluation be used to adjust MR content to meet neurodiverse needs, for example by enabling closed captions for learners with hearing impairments?

2. Can the outcome of a dynamic learner profile be used to tailor the complexity of learning activities, offering foundational tasks for novices and more challenging scenarios for advanced learners?

The EAIL proof of concept will involve a randomised control test with 200 learners across selected UK colleges. Learners will be divided into two groups: one will complete standard MR modules, while the other group will experience MR learning tailored by EAIL’s diagnostic assessments and adaptive AI technology.

Evaluation data will explore EAIL’s impact on learner engagement, understanding, and learning outcomes, gathering insights into how personalised MR experiences affect learning retention and confidence.

Expected outcomes

The project team believe that the enhanced technology will lead to:

1. Improved measurement of learning by effectively establishing learner starting points.
2. A more effective learning environment through understanding and addressing individual barriers.
3. Exposure to a wider variety of situations by randomising learning scenarios, encouraging a more realistic experience.
4. Effective formative assessments tailored to each learner's ability through the incorporation of adaptive assessments.

Ultimately, we expect this approach to inspire both learners and educators, promoting a more innovative and effective learning environment that helps UK adults develop the skills they need to gain and maintain employment.
