Enhanced Assessment Immersive Learning (EAIL)
Metaverse Learning has been awarded £50,000 by the Assessment Innovation Fund (AIF), supported by Ufi VocTech Trust and NCFE, to develop a pioneering mixed reality (MR) platform that personalises assessment and learning through advanced diagnostics and AI technology.
The EAIL project seeks to overcome current VR/MR education limitations by delivering tailored learning experiences for each user. By creating a learner profile, EAIL adapts VR scenarios to individual abilities, making VR training more accessible and effective for diverse learning needs.

Research question |
Findings |
Can adaptive learning improve personalisation and learner confidence in vocational education? |
Learners reported increased confidence in clinical reasoning, rising from 4% pre-trial to 60% post-trial. 60% found the adaptive scenario more engaging than standard training methods, and 100% agreed that adaptive learning environments should be implemented more widely. |
Can AI-powered features support learner progression and accessibility? |
The AI chatbot was valued for subject-specific support, with 100% of users reporting improved understanding. However, limitations in scenario contextualisation and speech recognition reliability were noted. |
Can adaptive formative assessment align with individual learner ability? |
The scenario adjusted question difficulty based on learner input (for example, response time, accuracy and confidence). Learners responded positively, but further validation is needed to assess alignment with curriculum standards and assessment reliability. |
Conclusions
The project demonstrated early promise in using adaptive and AI-powered technologies to personalise learning and support differentiated progression. Learners valued the flexibility, accessibility and tailored support offered by the scenario. Technical improvements and further evaluation are recommended to strengthen reliability and impact at scale.
Next steps
The project team will explore improvements to speech recognition and scenario contextualisation, alongside developing more intuitive interfaces such as avatar-led interaction. Future trials will expand to a broader learner base and will include objective performance measures to validate learning outcomes. NCFE will also work with partners to align adaptive features with curriculum standards and educator practice, supporting wider adoption across vocational education.
