Learner stories: “The T Level has given me a distinct advantage over others”
Mair Gort is a current second-year Science T Level student, studying at The Manchester College (LTE Group). Having completed her placement hours within the chemistry lab of the University of Manchester, Mair now has plans to work and achieve an internship via the NHS.
We spoke with Mair to learn how the Science T Level is setting her up to achieve her future career aspirations of working in dentistry or gynaecology.
Why did you choose to study a T Level?
“I chose to study a T Level because I was attracted to the prospect of entering the workplace following my studies. Because of the unique 45-day placement, this course provides a chance for students to grow their networking skills and branch out to local employers.”
What have been the highlights from the course?
“Socially, I have achieved long lasting friendships with individuals aspiring to lead breakthroughs in scientific spheres such as biomedical science, medicine and healthcare sciences. My peers and tutors are constant sources of inspiration and have supported me through the many successes and challenges of this course!
“Above all, I feel that I have developed into an enthusiastic individual that has the self-drive and focus to commit to projects. I owe this to my T Level course.”
Where did you do your placement(s) and what did you learn?
“I was fortunate enough to complete most of my placement hours in the chemistry labs of the University of Manchester. There, I had the opportunity to learn universal lab etiquette and explored the appropriate way to conduct myself in a professional setting.
“In terms of scientific application, my group was taught how to sterilise lab equipment, conduct experiments in highly sterile and aseptic environments and how to use analytical applications to format the data of experiments.”
What are your plans now and in the future?
“Currently, I am planning to work and achieve an internship via the NHS. I have also applied to several scientific degree apprenticeships, including biomedical science and bio engineering with Manchester Metropolitan University.
“In the future, I am planning to either study dentistry or gynecology, in the hopes of researching a cure for endometriosis. I will be taking the next year to navigate both fields and complete an undergraduate degree or degree apprenticeship, depending on availability.”
In what ways has the T Level prepared you for your next steps?
“The T Level has given me a distinct advantage over other apprenticeship applicants, as I have completed a high-level placement with a Russell Group university. This shows that I can work to a high standard.”
Would you recommend T Levels to others? If yes, why?
“I constantly recommend T Levels to school leavers, specifically because of all the opportunities you have once you complete the course.”
