Dedication to the school community

Described as a ‘beacon of strength and compassion within the school community’, Lily is a determined pupil and incredibly deserving winner of the V Cert Learner of the Year commendation in our 2024 Aspiration Awards.

16-year-old Lily's story is one of extraordinary strength. In December 2023, Lily faced the devastating loss of her beloved mum, after a prolonged battle with cancer. Throughout her mum's illness, Lily supported her as a young carer, demonstrating maturity and compassion beyond her years.

Despite the challenges she’s faced, Lily has shown remarkable strength, consistently puts 100% effort into her schoolwork and has a determination to excel. Lily embraces every learning opportunity, turning adversity into motivation for personal and academic growth.

In addition to her academic achievements, Lily has excellent communication and empathy skills. She articulates her thoughts effectively, fostering positive and open dialogue within the school community, enhancing not only her own learning experience but also contributing to the overall positive atmosphere within the school. And even while facing her personal struggles, Lily remains acutely aware of the needs and emotions of her peers, always being an invaluable pillar of support to her friends.

An inspiration to all

Kelly Coleby, Deputy Head of Faculty - Business and Industry at Walker Riverside Academy, said: “As her childcare teacher, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing Lily's exceptional journey, marked by resilience, empathy, and unwavering dedication, despite facing profound challenges.

“What sets Lily apart is her ability to overcome adversity with grace and determination. The passing of her mam brought about a profound and life-altering change, yet Lily has navigated this journey with resilience that is truly inspiring. She has not only coped with personal loss but has also managed to maintain a steadfast commitment to her education.

“It’s evident that Lily has faced many challenges head-on, emerging stronger and more compassionate. Her ability to maintain a positive attitude and commitment to both personal and academic goals in the face of adversity is truly commendable.

“Her journey, marked by resilience, empathy, and academic excellence, embodies the spirit of this accolade. Lily not only navigates personal challenges with grace but also actively contributes to the well-being of our school community.”
