SEND students use our RSHE qualifications to build happy and healthy lives, inside and outside of the classroom
26 Jan 2021
Learners at Meadowcroft School have been undertaking Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) qualifications(**) from CACHE – part of the NCFE family, to reach personal success.
Meadowcroft School in Wakefield works with SEND pupils and those who have complex or additional learning needs, many who have previously struggled in mainstream, formal education. The school spends time getting to know each learner individually so they can help them to overcome barriers that prevent them from engaging in education.
Natalie O'Donnell, a teacher at Meadowcroft School explained: “We know each child well enough to be able to set ambitious, realistic targets and put in place a structure of support to ensure they achieve them. Success looks very, very different for each child, so we take time to build personal plans and celebrate the progress they make.”
Using RSHE to support personal development
RSHE became compulsory for schools in September 2020. When seeking an RSHE qualification, Meadowcroft School was looking for an award that encompassed all of the statutory guidance, but also covered key safeguarding issues that their young learners needed support and guidance with.
RSHE qualifications from CACHE(**) do just that! They are mapped to 100% of government guidance to ensure schools meet Ofsted requirements, whilst providing recognition for learner achievements in this key subject area.
Speaking of the importance of RSHE qualification to learners at Meadowcroft, Natalie said: “Our RSHE curriculum is extremely valuable to our learners, it is designed to make sure our children are happy, healthy and safe at school, at home and in the community. The RSHE qualifications from CACHE encompass this and support our aim of ensuring our children can be healthy, happy, successful individuals when they leave us.”
Delivering a successful RSHE provision
RSHE qualifications from CACHE are extremely flexible. The suite of qualifications are available in three sizes suitable for different year groups, as well as individual units, so schools can choose the best provision that suits them and their learners – with high-quality, classroom-ready resources available from Jigsaw and iAchieve to support delivery.
Natalie continued: “It has been very straight forward to deliver these qualifications. The scheme of work helps with planning and the workbooks provide assessment data. The Jigsaw scheme of work matches the qualification criteria and provides PowerPoint presentations, videos and worksheets to supplement the lessons planned by teachers. I would recommend these qualifications as pupils gain important knowledge to equip them for life. All the statutory government guidance is covered, and the pupils gain a nationally recognised certificate.”
