V Cert Estimation Guidance

Important message – Centre Assessed Grade submission

The extended deadline for submitting Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs) for your learners has now passed (midday on 24 June). You are still able to submit grades for your learners, using the guidance documents below, and your learners will receive a calculated result. We will continue to support you and your learners during this process, but must remind you that data received after the extended deadline of 24 June20 may not be received in time to guarantee a result by the published results date.If you have any further queries, please contact us by calling 0191 239 8000, emailing [email protected] or using the live chat function of the website.

On 9 April, the Secretary of State for Education advised Ofqual that assessments for vocational and technical qualifications (including V Certs) cannot proceed as planned this summer, given the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting Government measures put in place.

Since then, NCFE has been working closely with Ofqual to put a robust process in place, allowing impacted centres to submit estimated grades for their learners. Below you can find further information relating to this, specifically for V Cert qualifications.

 External Assessment attempts and eligibility

The Department for Education (DfE) technical guidance stipulates that learners are only allowed a maximum of 2 attempts at the external assessed component. Therefore, any learners who have already undertaken 2 attempts will not be eligible for a calculated result. Learners who’ve had no attempts or one attempt, will be eligible for a calculated result.

Year 9, 10 and 11 learners who were expecting to complete assessments between 20 March and 31 July 2020 will be eligible learners for a calculated result.

If a learner has had no attempts or one attempt at external assessment – so they were either expecting to sit their first or second attempt this summer, then they will be expected to submit a CAG for the external assessment before 24 June 2020.

Assigning Learner Status

As part of the estimation process, you will be asked to confirm which learners are completing and which learners are mid-flight.

Mid-flight learners will typically be those learners in year 9 or 10 who are not in their final year of study.

Completing learners will typically be those learners in year 11 who are in their final year of study and looking to achieve their qualification this summer.

Learners who would not have been expecting to sit the exam this summer should be left blank.

This will identify your ‘Covid-19 Cohort’.

Assigning Rank Order

You will be required to submit a rank order for the full cohort of learners where any CAGs are being submitted for the external assessment (not required for Model 2 V Certs).

This means ranking your Covid-19 Cohort in order of ability (1 being the highest).

NOTE: The same ranking cannot be used for multiple learners.

Submitting a CAG

All CAGs must be submitted to The Portal by 24 June.
