Life as an apprentice

 William Gammack, Apprentice PA at NCFE, shares his outlook on life as an apprentice, including why he chose to take an apprenticeship and his experience so far at NCFE with the support of leading training provider, Learning Curve Group.

“I took a few different paths in my education and career before finding something I really love – an apprenticeship with Learning Curve Group at NCFE.

When I finished school, the most obvious next step seemed to be A Levels, but after taking my AS Levels I decided this route wasn’t for me. I went on to complete a Level 3 college course in Tree Surgery and really enjoyed the practical aspects of the course - being able to climb trees for a living sounded like the perfect career. However, once I started my degree, I felt there was too much theory and not enough practical work, and as I learn by doing, I started to reconsider my options.   

I increased my hours at my part-time retail job, earning more money which was great, but before long realised that a long-term career in retail didn’t really appeal to me. I wanted to learn more and better myself, while still earning money, so an apprenticeship seemed like the perfect option.  I found the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration at NCFE, as the role of Apprentice PA to Directors, which looked varied, exciting and a great place to work.  

I was delighted when I was offered the role, and so far the NCFE apprenticeship with Learning Curve Group has been amazing. I’ve received so much support from Learning Curve, including an information pack and online resources to help me prepare for Gateway and end-point assessment. I’ve also received a log book to track my off-the-job training which has been really important.

Learning Curve Group schedule regular monthly meetings to review my progress and make sure I’m on track to pass, and are always on hand to respond to any queries which is really reassuring.

Every day is different at NCFE, I’m currently one month in to my 18 month apprenticeship, but my contract here is for 24 months. As a PA to the Directors, my tasks range from booking travel, sorting expenses or arranging meetings – however, the nature of the apprenticeship means that once my contract is complete, I could look to go into different areas of the business.

I really feel like I’m rewarded for my work while learning so much. I’m inspired to be the best I can be.”
